CARA returns to Printed Matter's NY Art Book Fair 2026!

Find us on the first floor at Table Q13, with a selection of books related to CARA’s current programming, as well as our recent publications: Dear Mazie,: Sanctuary, Speculation, and Sky, edited by Amber Esseiva; Judith Namala: A Novella by Serubiri Moses; The Earth, the Fire, the Water, and the Winds: For a Museum of Errantry with Édouard Glissant, edited by Paulo Miyada and Ana Roman, and Michael Richards: Are You Down? edited by Alex Fialho and Melissa Levin.

Join us on Sunday, September 27 at 2pm in The Classroom at the NY Art Book Fair for a conversation about Dear Mazie,: Sanctuary, Speculation, and Sky, with Emanuel Admassu and Jen Wood. Dear Mazie, is an experimental reader that explores the life, work, and legacy of Amaza Lee Meredith (1895–1984), a trailblazing artist and educator who became the first known Black queer woman to practice as an architect in the United States. On the occasion of the publication’s launch, contributors Admassu and Wood, co-founders of the art, architecture, and urban design practice AD-WO, speak to their work translating Meredith’s archival materials and architectural interventions into the eponymous exhibition and the publication. Together, they consider how they invoked Meredith’s role as a creator of “emotional architectures”: someone who built sanctuaries (from homes to institutions to communities) for herself and other people of color to foster rigorous artistic pursuit, free of persecution. This year's NY Art Book Fair program series The Classroom was organized in collaboration with Emmy Catedral, CARA's Bookstore Director. This long-running program provides space for artists, writers, designers, and publishers to highlight new releases at NYABF and fosters dialogue around important themes in artists’ book publishing.
